I Found Wild Betta Fish Surviving in a Puddle…

I never thought I’d see this… after one of the worst droughts in years, I returned to a hidden Florida canal where I once found thousands of exotic fish — flagfish, jewel cichlids, Mayans, tilapia, and even wild bettas. During the dry season, the canal nearly disappeared, leaving fish stranded in shallow tunnels and puddles.

But somehow, against all odds, the bettas survived. Tonight, I set out to see what’s left. After nets full of tilapia, invasive apple snails, and even a random frog, I finally discovered two wild bettas still holding on. One hiding in thick weeds, the other surviving in nothing more than a muddy puddle.

Back at the fish room, I reveal my newly stocked 300-gallon monster fish tank — packed with Brokopondo Peacock Bass, Azuls, Ripsaw Catfish, Piraiba, Datnoids, Plecos, and more. And in the end, I give the rescued wild bettas a new home in my shrimp tank.

This is the story of survival, resilience, and the hidden world beneath Florida’s canals.
