Almost every family has pets. Most of them are cats, small-breed dogs, guinea pigs, rats, hamsters, parrots, and canaries. But recently it has become fashionable to have unusual pets: ants, Achatina snails, various reptiles, chinchillas, ferrets, and even snakes.
If snakes used to be considered exotic pets, nowadays they can be classified as common. It is worth saying right away that not all types of snakes can be kept at home as a pet. Of the pythons, the royal, rainbow, reticulated, and emperor python are commonly kept at home. Of the snakes, the Maizey's snake and the King's snake are considered pets. Poisonous snakes are not allowed to be kept in the home.
A snake, as a pet, is not difficult to keep at all. It should be noted at once that free movement of the snake around the apartment is not allowed, because reptiles need certain conditions of habitat. This requires equipping a terrarium, monitoring its cleanliness, and availability of water in the drinker. The size of the terrarium is selected according to the size of the snake. Depending on their habitat in the wild, terrariums are:
Horizontal, for land snakes.
Cubic, for semi-tree snakes.
Vertical, for tree snakes.
Terrarium bedding can be made of newspapers, paper napkins, moss, and coconut substrate, but you should keep in mind that newspapers and napkins do not retain moisture, and moss and coconut substrate is very expensive. And it is strictly forbidden to use sand as bedding.
Also do not forget to equip the terrarium warm corner, for this you can use a simple light bulb, heating cord, or mirror lamp.
The drinking bowl should be of such size that the snake can fit into it. Also, the drinker should be stable - snakes like to turn them over. Water should be changed every three days. For tree-type snakes, you should provide branches at different levels and different sizes.
The snake eats rodents, insects, birds, and other reptiles. It is not necessary to feed it clean pieces of meat but to give the snake whole food. The size of the food should correspond to the thickest part of the snake. Young medium-sized snakes are fed once a week. Adults, such as a python, once every three weeks. Daily chickens, ducklings, hamsters, and mice can be fed.
Feeding hamsters frequently is not allowed, it is a very fatty food for snakes. And you should not touch the snake immediately after feeding and while the food is being digested, as the snake may bite, even the calmest one.
