Often mistaken for venomous snakes, keelbacks are actually harmless, water-loving serpents found in abundance across southern India and the Deccan Plateau. With their beautifully keeled (ridged) scales and calm nature, these snakes play a vital role in controlling frog and fish populations. Despite their fierce looks, keelbacks are shy, non-venomous, and pose no threat to humans — a perfect reminder that not every snake is scary!
