The "place" command is when you send the dog to an elevated surface and they stay there until you release theme. It's a very practical command that you can use at the office, in your house, when guests come over, while you're eating dinner, when you're out camping, etc.
While on place, the dog is allowed to sit, stand, down, sleep, etc, so long as all 4 paws remain on the place board.
Training a reliable place command takes about a week. After a week of practice, your dog will be able to hold the place command for hours at a time, even around distractions.
