Dog Tips for Beginners: Teaching dog skateboarding might sound crazy… but this rescue pup is learning to ride ramps. 🛹🐕
Day two of training and things are already getting exciting. Even though the ground at the skatepark is still wet from a rainy weekend, we showed up with one goal: have fun and build MJ’s confidence on the board.
If you’ve ever wondered whether dogs can learn tricks like skateboarding, the answer is yes with patience, the right motivation, and lots of positive reinforcement.
And today’s training session proved it.
In this video, I continue my series teaching my dog MJ how to skateboard down a ramp. She already knows how to ride a skateboard on flat ground, but ramps are a completely different challenge.
So today we worked on helping her lean forward and commit to the ride.
Here’s what happened during this training session:
• We arrived at the skatepark for Day 2 of ramp training
• The ground was wet after a rainy weekend, so we took things slow
• I brought two types of rewards: regular treats and boiled chicken (MJ’s favorite high-value reward)
• Dogs can tell the difference between treats higher value rewards boost motivation
• When MJ does exactly what I want, she gets a “jackpot” reward (multiple treats at once)
• We practiced pushing the skateboard gently while encouraging her to lean forward
• And then… she started getting it!
The moment MJ started rolling down the ramp with more confidence was honestly incredible.
MJ is a rescue dog that we adopted four years ago, and seeing her grow in confidence like this is exactly why I’m making this series.
Because the real message here isn’t just about skateboarding.
It’s about showing people what love, patience, and consistent dog training can do.
🐶 Why this training works
Positive reinforcement is one of the most effective ways to train dogs. When they associate a behavior with rewards and encouragement, they gain confidence and learn faster.
Key training ideas from this session:
• Use high-value treats for difficult behaviors
• Reward breakthroughs with a jackpot reward
• Build confidence gradually
• Celebrate small wins during training
• Always keep training fun and pressure-free
And MJ is already improving.
By the end of the session, she was clearly more confident on the board. With a little more time and practice, she’ll be riding down this ramp like a pro.
And yes… Day 3 is coming.
