Training dog to track wounded deer is not difficult or complicated, and there are numerous ways to do it. That being said, there are a number of tools that you need in order to be successful! This video from one of our DogBone Handlers Workshops shows Chris Smith of Victory Deer Recovery demonstrating this simple drill on how we introduce the idea of tracking a wounded deer to a dog,

A good deer tracking dog is a good problem solver. Keep it fun, turn it into a game, help the dog when they need help, and guide them to understanding. Do all this and you can easily train dog to track wounded deer.

Training a dog to track wounded deer is not hard. What it takes is connecting value to the scent of an injured deer. For Retrievers, the reward found at the end of the line is a retrieve. This process should be fun for the dog, and turned into a game! All dogs track naturally, we just need to teach them what scents to follow and unlock their inner blood trailing instincts.
