In Episode 18 of our Puppy Vlog, we’re exploring how important Place command is, and why it’s one of our favorite commands :)
We’ve got our 3-month-old Maltipoo student Wagley demonstrating, while trainer Sparky works with him through the lesson!
The Place cot is so valuable to a young puppy. It’s a place for them to hang out and where they feel safe while they’re on it.
It’s also a wonderful place to have puppies target. When puppies target a place cot, they understand this is their area. No one is going to bother them in this area, they get to train here, they get rewarded with their food here, and they’re always going to feel comfortable on there.
As puppies get a little bit stronger with the place cot, meaning they’re not trying to get off every other second, we can then build upon that by practicing more advanced commands, having them stay on for longer durations of time, and adding distractions around them.
As always, take your time, reward your puppy often, and build up slowly! You can also use a dog bed, a blanket or a cushion as a Place cot substitute ;) Place can be any target you’d like it to be.
